Starting in Ft. Worth, the train headed south through Temple and on to Houston and Silsbee—a whole new territory for this powerful 4-8-2 Mountain-type locomotive. She performed flawlessly, highballing over former Santa Fe track at incredible speeds. On the run out to Silsbee and back the Special traversed the former Southern Pacific Sunset Route between Houston and Beaumont.
