Description

Nicknamed "Centennial" and "Big Jack", the DDA40X with it's two 3,300 hp diesel engines is the most powerful single-unit diesel locomotive type ever built as well as the longest, measuring in at 98 ' 5" long. Built for the Union Pacific Railroad by General Motors in La Grange, Illinois, the DDA40X locomotives were used as the testbeds for technology that would go into future EMD products. The 'X' in the designation stood for Experimental. Several new and experimental systems were tested with the DDA40X including the modular electronic control systems later used on EMD's Dash-2. A few of the units were fitted with air raid sirens in order to warn trackside personnel when away from grade crossings. The results were inconclusive.

DD40X March 5, 2011
Reviewer: Paul from Australia
Well detail and large loco which needs big sweeping curses to get around no good on tight curses, able to up to 20 cars with ease on 4 percent grade.
