DCC is an acronym for Digital Command Control.
DCC systems allow you to control multiple locomotives from one control unit where in the past you could only control one at a time.
The NMRA has put standards in place that allow DCC systems and decorders from several manufacturers work together. These systems range from small and easy to use systems to systems that can control club sized layouts.
