This model is very refined. A new example from Kato skills. I really enjoy to see this model running on tracks.
DCC conversion is not "plug and play". The recommended decoder do not fit correctly and need to be adjusted but it is not a huge work
But it is a great model I was waiting for a long time. Now I am waiting for the passenger cars.
Thanks again Kato

This is a beautiful model, there is no doubt...the pantographs alone are amazing. Out of the box, she ran very smoothly. Installation of a Digitrax DN163K1C was definitely not "drop in", but required some circuit board trimming and engine-contact blade bending & shortening. The decoder stopped working when the shell was installed, but some copper shims between the decoder board and chassis solved this glitch. I ran the GG1 around my Kato-sectional-track layout from end to end with no problems...initially, but a few spots on the layout are now causing main truck derailing (on or over turnouts). Additional investigation is needed, but you have to figure this long beast might be sensitive to imperfect track/frogs/joints. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and I would definitely buy another GG1 dressed in PRR's frieight livery. Good Job Kato!

This model is a refined example from Kato that runs smoothly and negotiates first my test track then my layout with ease. Mind you I do have all my curves over 19" in radius. The down side is the pantographs are NOT spring loaded and hence if running under wire will depress and remain depressed. Solution is to add a fine piece of elastic between the elbows. Be careful when doing this as the pantos are delicate. The other thing about the pantos are the collection head deflects and can become fouled on the overhead if any irregularities exist.
DCC conversion is a little tricky due the difficulty in separating the body from the frame requires patients and the bogies may become dislodged if pulled on. The bogies are articulated together and rely on the drive bogies connection to the frame.
But in general a great model and would rate a 5 star if the overhead gear was spring loaded and balanced. Well done Kato once again - time now for a AEM7
