The holes in the base are fairly small for medium sized ballast, so it does a very messy job. Not sure if it was made for only fine ballast.

Does not work property. Drops more on the inside of the tracks than outside. Ad claims that you can adjust the level of flow, its not ture. One can do a better job with just a spoon. Waste of money

Works very well. Lays ballast almost perfectly plus speeds the balast spreading process up tremendously without getting ballast all over the place. Now, if only someone could invent a good way to speed the gluing process up a lot, thus keeping it from being such a drag. Oh well. Anyway, this is a great little product.
