Description
Author: Barry Broskowitz
Softcover, 2010, 8.5 x 11, 215 pages, 64 photographs, tables and wiring diagrams, appendices.
This extensive four color guide for operating the MTH Digital Command System is intended to educate the reader on the basic and advanced features and functions of DCS as they apply to O gauge trains.
New to this edition: a specific addendum (two sections) on DCC application to HO gauge.
Features
Reviewed by Jim Barrett in OGR’s January 2010 issue, the original edition was hailed as an “indispensable tool” that “should be in the hands of every command control operator”. The book is a valuable reference for the experienced DCS operator, as well as anyone planning to add DCS to a layout.
The uncomplicated language used in this book allows anyone to understand and operate this command system regardless of his or her experience. Even the most expert DCS operators will find useful information in The DCS O Gauge Companion.
Each section advances from the previous section as a logical progression of information and practice, thereby providing a structure for learning that will appeal to the newcomer to DCS, while permitting the more experienced modeler to begin at the point of his or her understanding. Thus, the reader has the choice of starting from the beginning and working through the entire book, or jumping ahead to a later section.
The 2nd Edition of The DCS O Gauge Companion includes 43 additional pages, or nearly 20% more information than the original edition. There are numerous additions to existing subjects, including M.T.H.’s new Rev. L TIU, and additional ways to work with switch tracks and accessories. Two completely new sections on HO gauge have been added, as well.
--Chapter 1 provides an introduction to DCS.
--Chapter 2 discusses DCS as an operating system for your trains.
--Chapter 3 leads the reader through DCS implementation for a new or existing layout.
--Chapter 4 discusses accessory and switch track wiring and control.
--Chapter 5 addresses more than a dozen DCS advanced features and functions, including Z4K tracks, ALL engine operations, TIU power, locomotive lashups, trolleys and subways, routes. scenes, and record/playback.
--Chapter 6 discusses integrating DCS with TMCC and Legacy in the same layout.
--Chapter 7 discusses operating conventional engines together with DCS.
--Chapter 8 leads the reader through upgrading DCS software and PS2 engine sound files.
--Chapter 9 provides an extensive array of ways to troubleshoot problem situations that may occur.
--Chapter 10 is an addendum that discusses using the DCS Commander to operate HO PS3 engines.
--Chapter 11 is an addendum that discusses using the DCS Remote Commander.
--Ten Appendices provide an additional variety of technical information.
