The JNR type bonnet train 489 series express "Noto" was a train using the 489 series DC/DC limited express train of Kanazawa driver station of JR West (now Kanazawa general rolling stock office) in 1993 after JR conversion. It was first operated via the Shin-Etsu Line but since the Shin-Etsu Main Line between Yokogawa and Karuizawa was abolished in 1997, it was changed to the Joetsu Line, and as a regular train in 2010. It was active until (2010). After it ceased regular operation it was put into operation as a substitute for the Hakutaka but it was discontinued in 2012.
Currently, the leading car Kuha 489-501 is statically stored at Doihara Bonnet Park in Komatsu City, and Kuha 489-1 is exhibited and stored at the Kyoto Railway Museum.
