Purchased 2 of these decoders and turns out both faulty in regards to sound. Being sent to Digitrax for repair or exchange.

    Good Sound, lots of work...

Posted by Unknown on Jun 29th 2018

Has all the great Digitrax features, except it is just not plug and play. Need to solder LEDs and motor contacts from original Kato DC module, and re-work frame to accept speaker at the bottom of the fuel tank, otherwise no other place to install speaker.. I would look for other alternative is you just want to install sound and run...

OK sound, not plug and play.

Installed in an SD70ACe. Replaced the round speaker with an oval one. Lots of milling the chassis for the speaker to fit under the board. Sound comes on when you power the track. The only way to turn the sound off is to select another loco. Cannot manually turn it off by pressing F8 like other sound decoders.

    Not as pictured

Upon receipt of this decoder I noticed that there's a big capacitor hanging off the unit in addition to the speaker. The speaker is hard enough to deal with let alone a big capacitor. Had to mill the frame in two places to fit both the speaker and the capacitor on my Kato ES44AC.

    Not Happy

I am not happy with this decoder. Had trouble with it from the start. It would run for about 1 second before stalling and restarting. It would continue this cycle. I tried all the online tips, but was not successful. I even put the overly large capacitor on it and had not luck.

    Digitrax SDN144K1E sound decoder

Posted by Unknown on Jun 29th 2018

I installed this sound decoder into my Kato N scale C30-7 and set the sound for the Eveo motor. Had to modify the frame to clear the components on the bottom of the decoder board and for the oval speaker. Also machined out the fuel tank to accept the capacitor. This sound is great and loud and the decoder works perfectly.

    sdn144k1e decoder

This is a very good item ... works well and has many function capability. The problem I found is that it really does NOT fit the kato sd40-2 loco as advertised. In fact I nearly destroyed my new sd40-2 trying to make the speaker fit in the base (drilling out metal base). I ended up using a different decoder w/speaker mounted directly to the board. But loco did end up taking a real beating. Long story short, decoder is very good!

So far I'm very pleased with the decoder, it was simple to install once I machined out the weight of my Kato C30-7. I am planning to install a larger speaker in a dummy locomotive behind this one so the sound is even better!
