Background:
I operate on a very large layout with steep grades and long trains. The owner discovered that the best dynamic antidote to dirty track was the use of solid steel wheels. In his experience, plastic wheels and sintered metal wheels caked up with crud and spread the crud all along the rails. I decided to change out all wheel sets on my rolling stock to those with solid steel.
J.P. Barger conducted experiments that showed, in conjunction with other factors, sharp pointy axle bearings resulted in reduced rolling friction, compared with wheelsets with blunt or not-so-pointy axle bearings.
Quality:
My experiments with several brands of wheel sets with solid metal wheels showed me that the Exact Rail wheel sets performed best on my layout in trucks on which I installed solid metal wheel sets after first reaming the bearing sockets.
