Includes road numbers 97602 and 97623.The Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad (CEI) linked Chicago to Southern Illinois, St. Louis, and Evansville. Founded in 1877, it grew aggressively and stayed strong throughout the Great Depression and two World Wars. After WWII, great effort was made to create a modern system to serve Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. The Missouri Pacific RR began buying C&EI shares in the early 1960s and gained control in 1967, with a requirement that part of the C&EI went to the Louisville and Nashville RR! In 1976, MOPAC finally merged with C&EI and its Western Routes are now part of the Union Pacific RR, while its Eastern Routes are part of CSX.
