Description

In the late 1970s, Philadelphia's Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) began to design a replacement for the venerable PCC streetcars, then still in use. The agency turned to Kawasaki Heavy Industries of Japan to build the next generation of streetcars for Philadelphia. The Kawasaki single-end Light Rail Vehicle measured 50' long and 12' high off the rails, longer and higher than the PCC cars. The first demonstrator car, #9000, arrived in 1981 and began testing around Philadelphia, checking clearances and performance on all lines in service at the time. In the end, 112 'city' cars were produced (9000-9111) and all are still in service today, a testament to their builders and to SEPTA's maintenance department. The cars have gone through several different paint scheme variations since 1981. Also, some physical changes have been made, the most obvious being the replacement of the transom windows with one-piece windows starting about the year 2000.
