I now own four sets of these excellent cars! They make an impressive train. Look for footage of real-life prototype cars loaded with armored vehicles and you may also get hooked on them. My “tank train” of 25 of these cars tracks flawlessly, even around 9 3/4-inch 180-degree curves (but only after swapping out one original coupler on every cay with a Micro/Trains long-shank coupler!)
These cars are actually excellent but I rated them 4 Stars due to their couplers (more below). The details on these cars is excellent. The cars are made of metal and the 6-wheel trucks are flawless. Now, THE COUPLERS. A long train of these runs beautifully— until it tries to go around a standard 9.75-inch curve and one car after another derails. Adding extra weight and even grinding away part of the undercarriage to allow greater truck pivot angles does not help. However, when I replaced the cars’ short shank couplers with Micro-Trains 1016-10 MEDIUM shank couplers the problem vanished. Yes, the medium shank couplers reduce the beauty of a string of closely-coupled cars but only a little. I found that replacing only one coupler on each car, then building the train with the original short coupler of one car attached to the long coupler of the next car provides the expected sharp curve performance without completely eliminating the desired close-coupled appearance. SO, yes, I like these cars well enough now that I will buy a second set — and maybe a THIRD set. ONE FINAL TIP! I use my cars to transport CAN DO / DRAGON (brand) M1 tanks and M2 / M3 armored fighting vehicles, two per car. At 144 scale they are about 10% too big but their detail is very good AND the tanks’ tracks are a bit wider than the cars - just like in real life! These cars at M.B. Klein prices are a great deal!
