Not worth even the discount price

Posted by Steve on Jun 28th 2018

I bought this set about a month ago from a local hobby store. It has been nothing but trouble.

Out of the box, the EZ track straight pieces connected so poorly that the engine sputtered or stalled every time it passed over the rail joins. I had to go out and spend another $20 on 10" straight track pieces to cure this problem. Then, when I tried to add on with Bachmann's own turn-out switches, I found that (1) the turn-outs are poor and the train derails over them, and (2) the electrical connections of Bachmann's own turn-outs are not compatible with the set's extremely cheap transformer.

About the only good item in the set is the locomotive. It's a good strong engine. I even accidentally dropped it onto a hard surface (wooden table), and it still runs fine.

The locomotive is a keeper, but the rest of the set is Ebay or junk heap material. I would not buy this set if I had it to do over.

The headlight quit working the first time he played with it. Otherwise a nice set. Any way to change the bulb?

I am very disappointed with this set. The bell broke off almost immediately, and the engine runs very jerky. The headlight doesn't work right. I wouldn't reccomend this set.

    best bargain around

Posted by Jacob Bechtel on Jun 28th 2018

I have 2 of these sets - 1from M.B.Klein in 1980 and one from AL. in 2010. Both are great runners. No problem with track if you assemble carefully. Have converted 1 to DCC - GREAT! What a guarantee! Any problem send it to Phila. in the 1st year and they repair or replace FREE! After 1 year there is $15 service charge. Sent in a 1979 F9 engine with $15 & got a 2010 F7 back!!! Thanks Ted. Now have over 30 Bachmann locos!
