The North American P51 Mustang came into existence from a response from the British Air Ministry for a fighter that was able to escort well into Germany. The first flight of the Mustang was October 26, 1940, from there production would go onto number more then 15,000 units of all versions. First production models were powered by the Allison V-1710 engine which proved to be under powered. After upgrading the engine to the Packard built Rolls Royce Merlin V 1650-7 the P51 Mustang would go onto be one the best fighters of World War II.
