A great sign from the past! The Railway Express Agency (REA) was almost as well known as United Parcel Service (UPS) is today. In 1917, seven express companies were in the United States, but they were consolidated into American Railway Express during the First World War. In March of 1929, the assets and operations of American Railway Express were transferred to Railway Express Agency. REA provided small package and parcel transportation using the extant railroad infrastructure until the company ceased operations in 1975 when its business model ceased to be viable
